Benchmade Grizzly Creek Folding Knife

Introduction

During hiking, I would often encounter lots of weeds on some less well-maintained trails. What’s more annoying is that ticks are often hiding in weeds, and they can easily attach to my body when I inevitably brush against them. If only I had a knife to cut through weeds, I could avoid the risk of being bitten by ticks. Therefore, I naively thought that I need a good knife, easy to carry but bigger than a Swiss Army knife.

The Benchmade Grizzly Creek Folding Knife caught my attention. I purchased one and have used it in a couple of scenarios. In this blog post, I would like to share my user experience with the Benchmade Grizzly Creek Folding Knife.

Benchmade is a well-known knife brand in the United States, and the Grizzly Creek Folding Knife is one of their models that uses laminated wood for the handle, which looks extremely low-profile, classic and elegant. Of course, it is also undoubtedly sharp. I tried cutting papers, boxes, and meat at home, and it worked perfectly.

Since my main purpose of buying this knife is to use it for hiking, so I carried it with me on a hike where there were many weeds and thorny bushes on the trail. The open length of the knife is roughly 20 cm and the blade length is about 9 cm. So I thought it would be easy to cut through weeds and thorny bushes with it. However, I was completely wrong. Because weeds are soft and lack of support, the blade of the knife could not cut through them effectively when I wielded the knife. So it became almost useless for cutting weeds on the trail.

For larger knives, such as machetes, I heard they usually work well for cutting bushes and jungles, but I don’t know if they are also effective for cutting weeds. Even if they are effective, because they are large and look too noticeable, I will probably not consider carrying them with me on the trail.

Recently, I also learned that it is illegal for people who do not have the permission to cut any plants in some parks, such as the California State Parks. So probably I should never consider buying a knife for cutting weeds in the first place.
