Round Valley Regional Preserve
Introduction
On June 14th, 2025, I visited Round Valley Regional Preserve for a hike and took some landscape and wildlife photographs using the versatile Tamron 28-300mm F/4-7.1 lens that I just purchased. My takeaway from this lens is that it is definitely a much better choice than using the cell phone camera for wildlife photography. However, comparing to the large aperture heavy lenses, the wildlife images produced by this lens are not very sharp, unless I was extremely close to the subject. The Bokeh effect of wildlife photographs is also not very good, because the maximum aperture of this lens is only F/7.1 at 300 mm. But I should not complain too much, because this lens is so light that I can easily carry for a hike, costs as little as $900, and can be used for both landscape and wildlife photography.
The key wildlife species identified in the photographs are Ash-Throated Flycatcher, California Ground Squirrel, Western Bluebird, Botteri’s Sparrow, Acorn Woodpecker, Western Kingbird, Raven, Turkey Vulture, Red-Tailed Hawk, Black Phoebe, and American Rosefinch.
